3 Nutrition Hacks to Navigate the Holiday Season (Without Feeling Deprived!)
The holiday season is upon us! A time for fun, celebration, and… temptation.
Halloween through New Year’s, it’s challenging to avoid temptation, but the good news is you 𝘤𝘢𝘯 have both! And at CFIH, we want you to enjoy the holidays while still prioritizing your health and fitness.
Just applying a few nutrition hacks can go a long way, so you can feel your best, make empowered choices, and have a great holiday season too. Here are 3 strategies to try out this Halloween:
1. Fuel Up Before You Go
Whether you’re heading to a Halloween party, a festive gathering, or a night of trick-or-treating with the kiddos, show up satisfied. In other words, show up with a belly full of whole foods!
Eating a balanced, satisfying meal beforehand makes a massive difference. Be sure your meal is made up of all three macronutrients (lean protein, carbohydrate, and healthy fat). This will help keep your blood sugar stable while making it easier to say no to mindless munching. When you’re nourished, you’re far more likely to choose what you eat with intention rather than impulsively.
Try this: Try a meal like grilled chicken with roasted veggies, sweet potato, and grass fed butter.
2. Set Aside Your Treats (& Put the Rest Away)
We’re not here to demonize candy… life is too short not to enjoy those things too! Joy and moderation can absolutely coexist, and we encourage it. Rather than eating your candy from a bottomless pillowcase or a giant bowl, pick 1 to 3 of your favorite treats and give yourself permission to enjoy them (distraction-free).
Put the rest away—out of sight, out of mind. You’re far more likely to overindulge when candy is constantly visible or easily accessible.
Try this: Keep your chosen treats in a small jar, and store the rest in the freezer if you’re saving for later, or better yet…
3. Give the Rest to Someone in Need
The holidays are also a time for contribution. Don’t hesitate to share the sweetness. Once you’ve enjoyed your treats, consider donating the rest to a local shelter, community center, or a candy buy-back program that sends goodies to troops overseas.
Not only does this reduce temptation in your home, but it transforms that sugary surplus into a generous act of kindness. Win-win!
Try this: Set a family tradition of creating “Sweetness Gift Bags” together to donate, reinforcing gratitude and generosity.
Remember, It’s About Intentional Enjoyment
This season, focus on nourishment, not restriction. Choose what makes your body feel good and helps you enjoy the holiday season as well. With a little prep and a few mindset shifts, you can enjoy the holidays on your terms and still feel energized, empowered, and on the path to the goals that matter most to you.
