Thanksgiving is a time for connection, gratitude, and some seriously good food, too. If you’re trying to stay on track with your health and fitness goals, the endless buffets, snacks, and drinks can quickly derail your progress. The key? Having a nutrition game plan before you dive into the festivities. Here are three mindful yet totally doable strategies to help you stay grounded without missing out on the joy of the holiday.
1. Load Up a Plate and Take a Seat
It’s tempting to hang out near the snack table, grabbing a bite here, a handful there. But grazing makes it really difficult to track how much you’ve eaten. Instead, fill up a plate with foods you genuinely want to eat with intention. Choose appropriate portion sizes, then sit down and enjoy your meal. This small shift from standing and grazing to preparing a plate and sitting down to enjoy it helps you become more intentional with your choices. You’ll be able to see your portion sizes clearly, savor each bite, and recognize when you’re satisfied sooner.
2. Water Before Every Drink or Alternating
Holiday cocktails, cider, wine… they’re festive, but they can add up quickly in both calories and dehydration if you’re not careful. So a simple strategy that works well is to drink a full glass of water before each holiday beverage. Or if you prefer, you can alternate taking a sip of your holiday drink, and then a sip of your water. This habit helps you stay hydrated while helping you slow down your alcohol (and sugar) intake. You’ll likely find yourself feeling better the next day, too.
3. Set Your Fork Down Between Bites
Thanksgiving can turn into a speed-eating contest if you show up famished or with a mindset that “anything goes.” So when you’re enjoying those holiday goodies (which you should), be intentional about taking a bite, setting your fork down, and chewing each bite thoroughly. This approach encourages mindfulness, slows your pace, and gives your body time to send those crucial “I’m full” signals. Plus, you’ll enjoy your food more when you’re not rushing through it. It will also help prevent bloating.
Bonus Strategy: Eat Before You Go
We’ve discussed this before and we’ll mention it again. This tip is a game changer no matter what the event is. Whether it’s Thanksgiving dinner, a holiday party, or even a typical trip to the grocery store, make sure you’ve had a wholesome, satisfying meal beforehand. Arriving ravenous makes it harder to make intentional choices and easier to overeat or overindulge. Instead, fuel up before you head out. You’ll be less likely to go overboard and more likely to enjoy the experience (and the company) with clarity and control.
Holidays are all about connection and celebration… not restriction or guilt. These simple strategies help you stay grounded, feel in control, and fully ENJOY the holiday season. Remember, you don’t need to be perfect. Life is too short not to enjoy the holidays AND stay on track. You can have both.
