Winter has a way of throwing a wrench in our fitness routines. The mornings are cold, the roads icy, and motivation can take a mini vacation. Even if you’ve been consistent at the gym, the winter slump can sneak up, making workouts feel harder, or leaving you waiting for the gym to reopen before you move at all.
The good news? You don’t have to let weather control your progress. Even when life, work, or the elements get in the way, you can take control. With a little structure, accountability, and a few smart strategies, at-home workouts can actually become something you look forward to, even in the dead of winter.
Here are five ways to make it happen:
- Block it in your calendar. While you may not block your meals in your calendar, treat your workout like your next meal—non-negotiable and protected. Once it’s on your schedule, it’s much harder to skip.
- Have a plan before you start. Whether it’s a CFIH at-home workout, something you found online, or a routine you’ve done before, know exactly what you’re going to do before warming up. A clear plan helps you start (and finish) without getting distracted.
- Warm up with a walk. Bundle up for a quick walk before your workout. It gets your blood flowing, warms your body, and primes you to push a little harder during your session. Jumping jacks or light stretching work well too.
- Create accountability. Send a message to a coach or a friend letting them know you plan to complete your workout. Simply putting it out there increases the chances you’ll follow through.
- Celebrate the win. Once your workout is done, share it! Whether with your coach, accountability partner, or on social media. Acknowledging even small victories reinforces the habit and keeps momentum going.
Winter weather doesn’t have to be a barrier. The key is having a plan, building in accountability, and being proactive with your workouts. And if you want extra support, coaching can make a huge difference. A coach helps you pivot when life gets in the way, adjust your plan as needed, and stay accountable to your goals—no matter what the weather throws at you.
