What to expect during your first 3 months of CrossFit
Getting Started
Starting CrossFit can feel a bit intimidating at first—new terminology, unfamiliar movements, and intensity levels you might not be used to. But when you join a gym that is committed to helping you feel more comfortable and confident from the very get-go, your early days in CrossFit will feel incredibly rewarding.
Here’s a look at some of the key milestones new members can experience during their first three months of CrossFit, after your initial consultation:
1. Our Start-Up Programs
When you first join CFIH, you’ll begin with one of our beginner friendly start-up programs. This is an opportunity to work with a coach 1:1 or in a small group with other beginners. Each start-up program is designed to meet you where you are, teach you the movements of CrossFit, how to scale movements you cannot yet perform, and the CrossFit “lingo.” 😉 As your sessions progress, you’ll start getting the hang of each movement, and you’ll gain confidence, motivation, and feel better prepared to start your first official class! We’ll also gather data of your starting point, so we can track your progress and ensure you’re on the path to achieving your health and fitness goals!
2. Completing Your First Class
After completing your start-up sessions, it’s time to enter the regular class setting! And for many, just showing up for your first official class is a big win. It’s normal to feel a little intimidated when you first start out, even after your start-up sessions, but once you do, you’ll realize just how supportive the CFIH community is and how much the coaches will be there to help guide you throughout the process. So finishing that first workout is a huge milestone because it sets the stage for everything that comes next.
3. Weight Selection & Pacing
Your first couple of months of CrossFit will be an adjustment. At times, you may feel a little unsure of what weights to use, when to slow down, and when to push. This is normal, and figuring out what works best for you will be an explorative process you’ll navigate with the help of our coaches. Know that, trust the process, and stick with it. With time and practice, you’ll learn to make these decisions with confidence while reaping the benefits CrossFit will inevitably bring.
4. Progress & Results
If you’re consistent and can stick to 3+ workouts a week during your first 90 days, you’ll notice a lot of positive change in yourself! You’ll meet with your coach to reassess your progress and celebrate your wins! You’ll feel stronger, better conditioned, more energetic and mobile, and your family and friends will start noticing how you look and carry yourself! Whether it’s doing a pull-up for the first time, adding weight to your lifts, or experiencing changes to how your clothes fit, these milestones are exciting and will help stay motivated to keep going!
5. Mindset & Behavior Change
As your experience grows, you’ll feel more confident confronting mental barriers just as much as physical ones. Over time, you’ll start replacing limiting beliefs and behaviors with more positive alternatives. The physical milestones you never thought you could do will feel more possible, and the challenges you experience outside of the gym will become much easier to navigate. You’ll find yourself making better decisions in how you eat, sleep, and show up for yourself because you know how hard you’ve worked to experience the benefits that you have. It’s a win-win situation across the board, and this is where the benefits of CrossFit really take off!
Your First 90 Days & Beyond…
The first three months of CrossFit are all about laying the foundation. You’ll experience small but significant milestones, like finishing your first class, mastering basic movements, and seeing early strength gains. These early wins, though small in comparison to the big wins you’ll later experience, are crucial for building confidence, developing good habits, and setting you up for long-term success.
It’s important to celebrate each of these milestones and trust the process. Once you’ve surpassed the 3 month mark and you begin to understand the power of the methodology, the journey only gets more and more fun, exciting, and beneficial for your long term health and happiness!
